Goodnight From Me

Mia’s
dinosaur story

Mia sat on her rug with her stuffed dinosaur and a yellow banana. She patted the dinosaur's soft back. "Tonight we can play," Mia whispered. "A dinosaur. A banana. And absolutely no bedtime." The stuffed dinosaur's button eyes looked shiny in the lamp light.

Mia peeled a tiny bit of the banana, just enough to smell the sweet smell. Then she tucked the peel back so the banana could travel too. "Ready?" she asked. The dinosaur seemed ready. Mia seemed ready. The banana sat still in her hand.

Mia tiptoed to the hallway, banana in one hand, dinosaur under her arm. The floor felt cool. The house felt quiet. "We are going to the living room jungle," Mia said. She walked past the shoe basket, past the coat hooks, and into the big room. The couch was a hill. The pillows were moss.

Mia set the dinosaur on the hill and set the banana beside him. "Hello, Dino," she said. "This is Banana." "Hello, Banana," she said in a deep dinosaur voice. "We do not do bedtime." Mia giggled. "We do not do bedtime," she repeated, because repeating felt like a game.

First they needed a path through the moss pillows. Mia moved one pillow to the left. She moved one pillow to the right. A little path appeared between them. She walked Dino along the path, step, step, step. The banana rode in her other hand, yellow as a tiny sun.

Then Dino's foot bumped a pillow, and the path closed up. "Oh," said Mia. "The moss moved." She put the banana on the couch so it would not roll. She opened the pillows again, left and right, until the path was back. "There," she said. "Now we can go."

They went farther, around the coffee table that was a smooth rock. Mia made Dino peek over the rock. "I see a cave," she said, looking at the space under the table. She crawled under with Dino. She reached back and took the banana from the couch so Banana could come too.

Under the table it was dim and snug. "No bedtime in the cave," Mia whispered. Dino's voice whispered back, "No bedtime." Mia's yawn came anyway, small as a mouse. She pretended not to notice. They needed a snack for the journey, and Banana was right there. Mia peeled it all the way this time.

She broke off one piece for herself and one pretend piece for Dino. "Chew, chew," she said. Dino chewed in the air. The peel sat on the rug like a little boat. Mia put the leftover banana in the peel-boat so it would not get squished.

Then the lamp in the other room clicked softer, or maybe it only felt softer. The cave felt extra sleepy. "We still do not do bedtime," Mia said, but her voice was slower. Dino drooped against her knee. Mia blinked. "Maybe dinosaurs take quiet rests," she said.

She crawled out the same way she came in, banana boat in one hand, Dino in the other. Out from under the table, around the rock, along the pillow path. Left pillow. Right pillow. Step, step, step. She walked back past the coat hooks and the shoe basket.

The hallway led to her room, and her room led to her bed. Mia set the banana boat on her night table. She tucked Dino under the blanket first. "You can rest," she told him. "I can rest too." She climbed in beside him. The lamp made a warm circle on the wall. "A dinosaur.

A banana," Mia murmured. She smiled. "And now a cozy bed." Her eyes closed. The house stayed quiet. Sleep came like a soft blanket.
